On 29 May 2023, OFM – the sound of your life was announced as the winner of a silver award in the Beeld Jou Keuse readers’ recommendations where several companies in 102 categories received praise for their excellent service, reasonable prices and after-sales service.

Central South Africa’s leading radio station, OFM, was named one of the readers’ favourites in the ‘national radio station’ category alongside RSG and Jacaranda FM.

Says Nick Efstathiou, CEO of Central Media Group, of which OFM is a subsidiary: “We have a deep understanding of the market we serve, and to receive this plaudit is humbling. We tailor our content offering to meet the needs and preferences of our wonderful listeners. Central South Africa is a special place, with special people, and I thank them for this recognition.”

OFM is proud of the way we reflect the essence and lifestyle of our listeners in our programme offering.

“Receiving such an award is not only great for OFM as a station, but also for our advertisers. Everyone contributes to the sound of your life! It makes us proud to know that the product we put out there is heard, enjoyed and supported,” says Anchen Lintvelt, OFM sales and marketing manager.

Although the station is licensed by the Independent Communications Authority to broadcast in Afrikaans and English, OFM understands the importance of developing and supporting an indigenous language, unique to Africa.

So we go to great lengths to ensure that our music and content presentation also appeals to Afrikaans and even touches on issues that are of specific importance to Afrikaans communities.

“It is an incredible privilege to be able to express yourself in Afrikaans in a creative environment.

Our listeners’ love for the language makes it possible for our content creators to also embrace the language and offer them only the best. Thank you for the recognition, it’s a pleasure to serve you,” says OFM Content Manager, Elzette Boucher-Krüger.

In addition to having the news, entertainment and lifestyle content available on air and online in Afrikaans, OFM also takes the lead in regularly promoting fun campaigns and innovations in Afrikaans – recent examples include ‘onsie’ (a selfie of a group of people) and ‘bakkie arm’ (a sleeve that protects against the sun).

Advertisers wanting to connect with viable customers in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route are choosing Algoa FM as their preferred media choice in the broadcast footprint.

This is evident from the annual results to March 2023, as published by holding company AME Ltd on June 2.

“Algoa FM produced excellent results for the year ended 31 March 2023,” said AME Ltd. Group CEO Dave Tiltmann, in a statement on the results.

“Collectively, national and direct sales contributed to Net Radio Revenue ending 12% above budget, which together with tight financial controls, resulted in EBITDA last experienced pre-Covid.

“This performance was achieved despite a magnitude of conditions such as the severe water crisis, failing municipal infrastructure, disruptive power outages, and rising inflation, which was further exacerbated by the State of Disaster, which was only lifted during April of 2022.

“During the period under review, audiences have grown, online engagement is on an upward trajectory, and cash flow remains positive,” he wrote.

Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay, says: “The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa (BRC), reports that our audience grew by close-on 10% in the year under review, from 397 000 to 436 000 past seven-day listeners.

“BRC data also reveals that Algoa FM is in a class of its own in the country, enjoying the highest percentage of loyal listeners compared with the five other regional, commercial radio stations which target listeners living an adult contemporary lifestyle.”

Correspondingly, Algoa FM is helping advertisers reach their target market across multiple platforms.

“We have evolved into much more than a radio station as we now connect with loyal followers on air, online, via DStv’s Channel 837, and on the ground.

“Google Analytics reports that algoafm.co.za averages a million unique users while our stream @algoafm.co.za is attracting 1,6 million listening hours per quarter. We’ve also yielded encouraging growth in the Podcast space with Journey to Justice having garnered more than 71 thousand listens since launch.

“Algoa FM is also the most visible and interactive media house in the Eastern Cape, through activations with clients almost every weekend and often during the week,” says Jay.

The trend is growing as different advertisers continue to experience a positive return on investment across the station’s various platforms.

“Encouraging for us, are the type of bookings coming from our national advertisers via United Stations, our sales house in the national market. These clients clearly value the market we have crafted in our broadcast footprint, which extends from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and inland through the Karoo.

“Much of the success our advertisers are experiencing is due to us not selling advertising, but rather, developing affordable marketing solutions which achieve goals. My team understands the market intimately and aside from offering creative packages that really work, they’re highly skilled at crafting multi-media campaigns that deliver bang for buck,” says Jay.

BTV (Broadcast TV) is most at risk from load-shedding because it is reliant on a fixed plug-point screen in-home. We can see from the daily TAMS data provided by BRC that time spent viewing is down dramatically year on year. Average weekly viewing time 2023 YTD is down on average -28% over 2019 and -15% over 2022. See attached.

Just bear in mind though that this isn’t all due to load shedding. Some of it reflects the migration from BTV to STV (Streaming TV) on other devices. BRC_TAMS doesn’t measure STV.

Radio is not subject to the same level of risk for several reasons. In fact, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that during load shedding “listening behaviour” actually increases. It might not be listening to conventional broadcast radio on a “radio set” but certainly listening on a mobile device (casting with Bluetooth) and other LOD options like podcasts are big winners. In a recent study conducted by OFM 22% of respondents (n=1026) indicated that they increased listening behaviour during load shedding.

Why is radio not impacted to the same degree as TV?

Perhaps the best way to argue this point is to say that the last RAMS Amplify data already have load shedding built into it. Fieldwork covers Feb’22-Jan’23. Those periods were certainly loadshed albeit at a lower level.

Almost 9 out of every 10 content viewers (all forms of TV) listen to the radio every week. But very few (5%) listen to the radio while they are watching TV/ Video content (Fusion 22). Widespread anecdotal evidence confirms that the default load shedding response is to find something to listen to. Yes, it could be Spotify/ Wondery etc. but it could also be streaming your favourite radio station if you have a UPS/ Inverter/ Generator. I would argue that at the top end of the market, there is a strong case to suggest that load shedding is inflating radio listenership – especially during what were formerly TV viewing timeslots. This is important because it’s not like you need solar panels to stay in the game.

Only 23% of Pick n Pay (PnP) radio listeners listen to the radio “at home on radio set or hi-fi” (Fusion22 – NielsenDCS). There are multiple audio inputs that are not reliant on broadcast airtime.

If you’re advertising in drive-time, then in-car listenership is not impacted. No change in the audience. But if I was a heavy TV advertiser like PnP, I would double down on any supplementary radio advertising by going into timeslots previously dominated by TV. Far from being a problem, that’s bonus listeners. You fill in the TV reach gap with SONIC BRANDING.

Only 8% of PnP radio listeners listen to radio via DSTV. What we also know is that they are not listening to DSTV Audio while they are watching TV – that’s just technically not doable. They listen to DSTV Audio when they are not watching TV. In terms of the point above I would suggest that load shedding has the potential to increase DSTV Audio listening via other devices if the TV set is switched off. When load shedding takes place, they switch to data/wi-fi to listen to DSTV Audio (and of course all the other options).

On Wednesday, 17 May 2023, OFM’s BakkieArm fundraising campaign reached a climax when R100 000 was handed over to the Agri Securitas trust fund at OFM’s outdoor broadcast unit on NAMPO Park, during Grain SA at NAMPO Harvest Day.

The campaign was launched just after NAMPO Harvest Day 2022 when OFM’s breakfast programme – The Good Morning Breakfast, during their ‘word of the week’ insert, discussed the term ‘bakkie-arm’. The new creation refers to the sunburn pattern that a driver of a vehicle gets due to exposure to the sun. With listeners’ input, the team then decided that it was necessary to create a piece of clothing to protect against sunburn. They then also dubbed this #BakkieArm.

Listeners could purchase a #BakkieArm for a donation from R100 and so a considerable amount, also supplemented by OFM, was raised.

In order to further market the campaign, #BakkieArm was also released as a song in June and the video for it has already been viewed around 40 000 times on YouTube.

With lyrics from the pen of Good Morning Breakfast presenter, Shandor Potgieter, OFM Sales and Marketing Manager, Anchen Lintvelt, and exquisite mixing by Bobby Johnson of Rebirth Music, SOYL’s “Bakkie Arm” gets feet tapping.

OFM launched the #BakkieArm campaign to raise funds for Agri Securitas, a non-profit organisation that works to improve rural safety.

The radio station chose this organisation because Central South Africa represents the heartland of agriculture in South Africa.

Chairman Cobus van Zyl expressed his thanks during the handover. “One hundred per cent of this money goes to the trust that is used to help rural communities, which include farmers and their workers, across the country.”

Agri SA chief executive officer, Christo van der Rheede, who is also one of the trustees, announced that the funds will be used to help agricultural organisations to ensure rural safety.

“Crime is one of the biggest risks for the agricultural sector. This money is used for the purchase of cameras; setting up monitoring locations where teams must work together and the like. It also helps to prevent other risks, for example, the outbreak of fires and vehicle theft.”

Central Media Group CEO Nick Efstathiou explains that OFM has been supporting Agri Securitas for two decades. “Agriculture is very close to OFM’s heart and it’s good to be able to make such a difference. It is important for the company to contribute to the safety of producers and their workers as agriculture is an important sector. Many thanks to everyone who supported the campaign.”
