The Middelburg (Cape) Recreation Club has received R46 000 worth of sports equipment for a variety of disciplines through funds raised by the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, which is the biggest mass-participation charity event in the Eastern Cape.

Algoa FM partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) to promote healthy living and exercise for the first Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, which was held on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

Speaking at the handover, Inxuba Yethemba mayor Noncedo Zonke, said it was a municipality “with a passion for sport which excels at women’s running.

“Social programmes like these are very important because we do not need to focus only on academic performance. We need to encourage young people to keep healthy, and teach them that exercise makes you a complete person”.

DSRAC deputy director of the Chris Hani District Thoko Oliphant, said the Middelburg club was selected because of its enthusiastic participation in the first Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer.

Lorinda Brown, head of the Middelburg Recreational Club said “we can now lead a more active and healthier lifestyle thanks to the more than five thousand people who registered for the 2020 Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer”.

The equipment is being stored safely at the Ellen Olivier Primary School.

“We partner with both the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Department of Health” to promote healthy living and exercise in Algoa Country, says Algoa FM marketing manager Lesley Geyer.

Included in the equipment requested by the Middelburg Recreation Club are agility ladders, yoga mats, dumbbells, gym balls, water dispensers and a loudspeaker system.

Sam announced on air and posted on Facebook this morning, “For the past few months I’ve been living the best of both worlds, being on the breakfast show of the city’s hottest station and running a booming coaching business. Unfortunately, I’ve come to a point where, if I am going to show up 100%, I must let one go. During lockdown, I connected with so many people online, I ran support groups for people traumatised by Covid, and I realised how much that means to me to be able to help people see the light when it is very dark. Now I have clients all over the world in different time zones, and helping people grow and change and improve their lives has become my first passion. I have loved everything about working at Hot, the people here, the music, the positive, never-say-die attitudes of the Hot Cares family and I will miss it. But I am still the lucky one, because I will hear them every day.”

Hot 91.9FM is proud to announce the sponsorship of 22 year old SA woman racing driver Charisse van der Merwe as she embarks on the 2021 Pozidrive VW Challenge.

 Charisse started racing in the regional circuit when she was 19 and is one of the few females in a male-dominated sport.

Young women in the Wild Coast Zithulele Village will continue receiving training in life and practical skills thanks to a R118 000 donation by the empowerment shareholder of Algoa FM to the Masiphakameni Youth Development Programme.

“The programme‘s intention to develop confidence in young rural women was the key selling point for me,” says Algoa FM non-executive director Zola Tshefu.

Masiphakameni is a programme run by Jabulani Rural Health Foundation. 

Unemployed women from Zithulele and surrounds in the former Transkei attend an eight-month course which focuses on both “soft” and practical skills, according to programme facilitator Jenny Michell.

“What I love most about the Masiphakameni programme is the holistic approach to young women development through offering a broad range of training, life skills as well as new experiences and exposure,” adds Tshefu, who overseas the Algoa FM Empowerment Company, through which the funds have been channelled.

“I believe you may have all the education in the world but without self-confidence you cannot achieve much in life. That inner knowing that you have something to contribute to this world gives one unstoppable power,” she adds.

The programme includes afternoon placement with local NGOs or government institutions where the young women gain practical experience, and learn how to behave professionally in the work environment.

They also give back to the community through their work, says Michell.

Each participant receives a stipend for the work they perform. This can be used to support their families or saved towards paying for college or university.

“The benefit of this kind of investment in these young women goes beyond them as individuals, but also impacts their families and their villages, and the country stands to gain,” says Tshefu.

Funding provided from the Algoa FM Empowerment Company will help Masiphakameni to expand the courses it offers.

“We are planning to introduce a training programme called ‘Work 4 A Living’. It is a great course covering basics of financial literacy, work ethics, job preparation, taking responsibility for one’s own future and more,” says Michell.

 While it is hard to absorb any learnings from the year that was 2020, any chance to learn something should be met with an open mind if we are to unlock any opportunity for the future. While 2020 was simply dubbed ‘stifling’, there was a silver lining amidst the dark cloud of COVID-19 for media and, most especially, for radio. 

So, what did we learn? 

We learned that while everything was falling apart and credible news was hard to come by, among its audience, OFM was one of the few brands that could be relied upon for accurate and credible information related to the Coronavirus. 

We learned that, in general, radio listening was up by 30% (Kantar) by May 2020 and that 71% of Central South Africans listened to more radio than usual, during the then lockdown, across all of OFM’s available platforms – radio, mobile and desktop apps. 

 The absence the BRC (Broadcast Research Council of South Africa) RAMS (Radio Audience Measure) meant that OFM had to further inform itself about its audience and media consumption habits. The last reading pinned OFM’s 7-day cume at 315 000 listeners. BrandMapp (who independently track economically active South African’s online activity) pinned OFM’s listenership at 479 000. Thus, while the pandemic had a limiting effect overall, this forced the brand’s hand to be more insights-driven than ever before. These independent research studies and insights paved the way for more agile products that met a demand that otherwise would have not necessarily have been discovered, such as OFM LIVE LINK and BrandMAX. 

But radio is more than an extended aerial with a tuner and speaker. The modern age has given radio the opportunity to expand and meet its audience in cyberspace. 

OFM spent much of the last three years aggressively investing in and developing adjacent offerings, like various digital platforms, including social media, desktop and mobile apps, as well as a revamped website and streaming service, OFM Stasie2. OFM’s online users have increased almost 2% year on year to 1.745-million online users by December 2020 and a further 260 000 unique online streams. All of the above excludes the ambitious podcasting planned for 2021, which includes an association with leading podcast publisher – Wondery. 

What does this all mean? 

OFM is creating an ecosystem. A place where the brand and listeners can find and access each other across various and different platforms. Discoveries fast-tracked by the Coronavirus. 

So, what do we know now? 

We know that in 2021, OFM listeners indicated that they are likely to listen to more radio, and streamed audio services, than they did in 2020. Of the little over 1 100 respondents: 

  • 54% of OFM listeners indicated that they are likely to consume more radio;
  • 65% indicated that they already listen to more radio between 06:00 and 09:00 and that many kept their radio tuned onto OFM from 6am, in the car, at home and at work. An insight, revealed time and time again from the BRC RAMs, is that OFM has one of the highest instances of time spent listening over 7 days – 20.97 hours;
  • and 16% indicated that they are likely to consume more streamed audio offerings. 

“The study indicates the absolute strength of radio and audio consumption, listener engagement, and the loyalty OFM listeners have toward OFM. In 2021, OFM turn 35 years young and the station can be proud that radio and audio consumption is getting stronger,” – Nick Efstathiou, CEO of the Central Media Group, holding company of OFM. 

This translates to the absolute value of audio. Where there is engagement, there is a prospective solution, and radio sits at the table of this digital revolution. Audio remains inescapable and OFM intends to build on the legacy of its last 35 years in audio.

The thrill of winning isn’t limited to a listener experience. Algoa FM is helping its advertisers to craft effective competition-based campaigns that deliver results and grow market share.The media house has noticed a steady rise in responses to its on-air and online competitions, and this trend has been growing since the onset of the Covid-19 lockdown in March.

The best results are achieved when there is a good balance between reward, effort required to enter and entertainment value.

Nadia Pieterse, senior creative executive at Algoa FM says “Our listeners respond exceptionally well to mechanics which involve solving clues; riddles and general knowledge quizzes.’

Competitions that provide entertainment value or that incorporate ‘theatre of the mind’ elements, generate much more interaction than those which do not include a fun element.

Without this interaction, competitions become background noise.

Simultaneously, the path to participation is very important and therefore entering the competition, should not require too much effort on the part of the listener.

“A competition mechanic, which requires a quick and simple answer via Telegram or SMS, will always generate more entries than one where time and effort is required to enter… or that has too many steps and instructions to follow,” says Pieterse.

Algoa FM, which is the biggest media house in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route, leverages its on-air, online and on the ground platforms to help advertisers to reach and connect with their customers.

A happy national client who used radio platforms around the country to introduce a new service wrote: “They (the Algoa FM team) were organised, motivated and an absolute pleasure to work with. We had an amazing response. Stronger than the Western Cape in a number of areas.”

The type of prize is also important across all platforms, says Pieterse.

Algoa FM’s listeners respond best to competitions offering instant cash prizes, followed by those offering grocery vouchers.

Competitions with daily prizes render better results than those that only offer one grand prize to be won at the end of a week.

It has been our experience that listeners would rather have many opportunities to win smaller amounts than one chance to win a big amount.

The best results in respect of the number of entries are achieved through the momentum generated over a five-day competition, where a ‘live’ winner announcement takes place daily between Monday and Friday.

What has also come to the fore is the power of the relationship our listeners have developed with the on-air personalities at Algoa FM.

“It is always surprising to me how well Algoa FM presenters are known in the community,” says breakfast show co-host Lee Duru.

“Even though we are primarily a radio station, people recognise us as presenters when we go out.

“We can also see from the responses on our social media feeds that people value our opinions,” she adds.

An example of this is a motor vehicle dealership which sold nine people carriers – twice their target of four for the campaign – simply by offering a presenter the opportunity to drive the vehicle.

Listener interest was sparked by the presenter sharing his driving experience, with “the campaign having the dealership humming along with people all week,” according to the client.

“The success of competitions hosted on Algoa FM is testimony to the power of radio – it provides the ultimate path to purchase by connecting people to products and services like no other medium,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.
